IRIS Donation Drive

Join Yale’s Affinity Groups, Yale Library Staff Association, and Trestletree for a donation drive to benefit Afghan families that are served by Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS).

Stop by one of our 12 locations around campus to drop off your donation items between Monday, October 18th – Friday, November 5th, or visit our online registry.

Marinera: The History of Peru's National Dance

From its roots in slavery, indigenous culture and Spanish Colonialism, Marinera reflects a diverse blend of Peruvian influences. Through Marinera, the art of dance is used to teach new generations the culture of Peru and share our heritage with the world. Join the Yale Latino Networking Group and Cultural Dance Organization Marinera CT as we explore the importance and joy of Marinera and its place in Peru’s history.

Gritos y Susurros: Telling true life stories about being Latinas in today’s world

“New Haven’s “Somos Latinas” Storytelling Troupe and Yale’s “Oye!” Latine/x Spoken Word Poetry Troupe are performing at Yale’s La Casa Cultural as part of Latine/x Heritage Month on Friday, October 15 at 5:30pm ET. Acclaimed storytellers and poets: Elisabeth Anton, Jezrie Marcano Courtney, Denise Santisteban, and Cynthia Rojas, have performed on national and international platforms, garnering awards and praise for the power of their art.

Food Truck Event

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, please join the Yale Latino Networking Group and Yale Police Department to support Chef Efrain Nieves, owner of Tata’s Restaurant and Food Truck. Chef Efrain has been providing authentic Puerto Rican cuisine for 13 years. The first 50 people to make a purchase at Tata’s food truck will receive free “frituras”. The food truck will be located at Bristol Street, behind the Yale Health Plan Parking Garage (55 Lock Street).

Noche Latina @ Yale Soccer

Yale Athletics is hosting Noche Latina in collaboration with La Casa as part of their Latinx Heritage Month celebration. The day will include a women’s (4 pm) and men’s (7 pm) soccer double header, food trucks, and free t-shirts, while supplies last. Stop by the Yale Latino Networking Group table for free swag! Reese Stadium is located at the Yale Bowl Complex, 75 Central Ave, New Haven, CT 06515. Parking and admission are free.

Wonderful Books and Where to Find Them!

The New Haven Free Public Library, in partnership with the Yale Affinity Groups, is excited to bring you this new book club for families focusing on topics of social importance. This month we focus on Hispanic Heritage with a reading of Planting Stories: The Life of Librarian and Storyteller Pura Belpré by Anika Aldamuy Denise. Come for the reading and stay for the discussion. This event will take place in the Children’s Room of the New Haven Free Public Library, 133 Elm St. Questions? Call (203) 946-8129.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, please join the Yale Latino Networking Group and Working Women’s Network for salsa dancing and a beer cocktail tasting with Alisa Bowens-Mercado. No prior experience is required. We look forward to seeing you on the virtual dance floor!

Alisa Bowens-Mercado is the Founder, CEO, and Brewmaster of Rhythm Brewing Co. Affectionately known as “Lady Lager”, she made history by becoming the first African-American, woman-owned beer brand in the state of Connecticut (4th in the Country).

AFROPERUANOS: Resiliencia y Resistencia

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, please join the Yale Latino Networking Group, Yale African American Affinity Group, and Nadia Calmet for an AFROPERUANOS: Resiliencia y Resistencia workshop.

Cultural educator, artivist, and producer Nadia Calmet will discuss history, cultural diversity, gastronomy, and religion. She will also lead a dance demonstration of Cajón, Cajita Quijada (Afroperuvian instruments), Festejo, and Zamacueca.
