¡Palante! The Struggle Continues

The Yale US Health Justice Collaborative, Citywide Youth Coalition, and Yale Forestry’s Environmental Media & Arts Student Interest Group are proud to welcome Iris Morales, JD, community activist, attorney, educator, director, and author to New Haven for a series of events to be held across the city. A former member of the Young Lords Party, Morales has spent 30 years helping develop organizations dedicated to grassroots organizing and community empowerment, such as the Manhattan Neighborhood Network, the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, and the New Educational Opportunities Network. 

Morales is the director of the documentary ¡Palante Siempre Palante!: The Young Lords, and author of the book Through the Eyes of Rebel Women: The Young Lords, 1969-1976. Her visit will serve to bring the New Haven and Yale University community together for a series of events that discuss contemporary issues in organizing toward social justice from the perspective of one of the most influential organizations of the era. BOOK TALK | Through the Eyes of Rebel Women: Intersectionality in Grassroots Progressive Movements

Description: Morales will speak on themes from her book Through the Eyes of Rebel Women: The Young Lords, 1969-1976 which framed women’s equality within the Young Lords Party as a “revolution within the revolution”.

Description: In the midst of the African American liberation struggle and protests to end the Vietnam War, Puerto Rican communities in the late sixties fought for economic, racial and social justice. From the streets of Chicago to the barrios of New York City, the Young Lords emerged. They demanded decent living conditions and raised a militant voice for the liberation of Puerto Ricans and other Latinx groups in the United States and an end to the colonial status of Puerto Rico. Join us for a screening of the film and discussion with director.

PANEL TALK | Re-Building the Built Environment: Grassroots Activism & Lessons for Today
Saturday, Nov 11th, 12:00-2:00pm, Yale Forestry, 195 Prospect St

Description: Join us for a panel discussion with multiple generations of activists and organizers in an effort to promote an understanding of today’s most pressing environmental and health justice issues. The panel will apply a historical framework to contemporary activism and its relationship to the built environment, specifically addressing health and environmental justice in communities of color.
