What is your current role at Yale University?
I am a Financial Assistant for Yale Conferences & Events and sit with the Financial Planning & Analysis Department. I’ve been in my current role for a little over a year and a half.
What are your main responsibilities?
I primarily support Yale Conferences & Events and all daily financial activity. Some of my tasks include processing expense reports, setting up journal entries, setting up purchase orders, processing of supplier invoices, processing of event participant reimbursements/honoraria, management of the YC&E Business Office inbox, and being the department’s main point of information for all things related to financial policy and procedure. Some of my other main responsibilities include processing the final billing for most of the YC&E full service events and all the final billing for events held at YC&E’s Managed Venues (Greenberg Conference Center and Kline 14).
What do you like most about your work?
I love my current job! I enjoy seeing how my work directly contributes to the amazing events and summer programs that happen at Yale.
How did you begin your career?
Immediately after graduating from UConn, I began my career with a New Haven Promise internship at the Yale School of Medicine. During my summer internship, I worked with a centralized team of Financial Assistants who supported more than 50 departments at the med school. That internship taught me a lot about Yale’s financial policies and systems and played a key role to help me get where I am now! After completing my internship, I was a temporary Administrative Assistant for the New Haven Hiring Initiative (NHHI). This experience working in HR and with the NHHI taught me so many valuable skills, most of all how to be a young professional in the workplace.
What steps would you recommend one take to prepare to enter this field?
To enter this field, I would suggest taking the time to learn Yale’s financial policies, and taking any finance related training available through Workday. Another way to prepare to enter this field is by taking the initiative to learn more about software applications that are frequently used in finance, such as Workday, Excel, and Salesforce.
What skills, abilities, and personal attributes are essential to success in your job/this field?
In my personal experience, I’ve consistently demonstrated initiative and a willingness to take on new tasks and projects to expand my skillset and experience. For example, I recently stepped up and assisted the HR Business Office with critical responsibilities during a period of understaffing. In doing so, I was honored to receive the Finance Core Competence Award for Inspiration. This recognition was especially meaningful to me, as it acknowledged my initiative, and highlighted the positive impact of taking ownership in my work.
If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?
Yes I definitely would choose the same path! If I had to change one thing, it would have been to take more finance and accounting classes in college to deepen my knowledge.
