What is your current role at Yale University?
I work as a Superintendent for the Yale Office of Facilities at the School of Medicine.
What are your main responsibilities?
I oversee custodial services for several buildings, including the SHM B Wing, LEPH, College Place, NHIB, and the Power Plant.
What do you like most about your work?
What I enjoy most is working with people—the staff interactions and the daily challenges. Every day brings something new, which keeps things exciting. I love problem-solving and coming up with effective solutions. It’s a fast-paced environment, and I take pride in resolving issues—it gives me a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.
How does your job affect your general lifestyle?
At times, the role can be stressful, particularly when handling disciplinary actions or addressing complaints and performance issues with direct reports. These conversations can be draining. I’ve learned that it’s important to unwind before and after work to maintain positive energy. Being in a leadership position also means managing your emotions and staying composed when challenges arise, which can be tough.
How did you begin your career?
In my early twenties, I realized I had a natural ability to lead. I often found myself taking leadership roles both in and out of school. One of my managers offered me a supervisory position, even though I had no formal education or prior management experience. I accepted the role and learned on the job—through trial, error, and hands-on experience. Later, I decided to pursue formal education in a related field to strengthen my knowledge and skills.
What steps would you recommend one take to prepare to enter this field?
Read management books and articles, find mentors who can guide you, pursue a degree in management, and most importantly, develop a deep understanding of yourself. Know your strengths and determine whether your skills align with the demands of this field.
What skills, abilities, and personal attributes are essential to success in your job/this field?
Ask yourself: Do you enjoy working with people? Can you stay patient and solve problems effectively? Are you comfortable with the fact that progress takes time? If you have these qualities—problem-solving, patience, people skills—you’ll be well-suited for this kind of work.
If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself?
Yes, I would choose the same path. Even though I stepped into the opportunity without much preparation, I’ve grown into the role. However, if I could change one thing, I would shift to managing projects rather than supervising staff directly, as it would reduce the level of day-to-day stress.
What does YLNG mean to you and how have you contributed as a member?
To me, YLNG represents pride in one’s heritage and giving back to the community. It’s about sharing your skills to uplift others and make a difference. While I’m not a full member yet, I’m eager to contribute through volunteering, planning, and operations.
