Tell me about your current role at Yale University?

I am the Senior Administrative Assistant, working with the Communications and Public Relations team at YSPH.

What are your main responsibilities?

I provide a high level of administrative and organizational support in a variety of capacities including scheduling and calendar management for the Assistant Dean and team. My responsibilities also include expense management, reimbursements, requisitions, and invoicing; communications, special projects and presentations; daily administration and posting of news stories and clips on the YSPH website, along with monitoring news queues and events for approval to be shared on our sites; and creating/publishing newsletters and announcements via Yale messages. I also track data necessary to aid in the mission and critical goals of the department.

What do you like most about your work?

The ability to know that I am part of a team that is inclusive and is working hard to bring value to what we do everyday. I enjoy working with my team at YSPH.

How does your job affect your general lifestyle?

I am passionate about making a difference.

How did you begin your career?

I began my professional career in the corporate environment and was fortunate to have mentors who were patient with me and showed me by example that one must always strive to learn something new to grow, to be passionate, and self-motivated.

What steps would you recommend one take to prepare to enter this field?

Train, use your experience to strive for the next challenge you set for yourself, and find a mentor.

What skills, abilities, and personal attributes are essential to success in your job/this field?

One must decide what is it that you like and want to do with your 35-40 hours a week (or more). You have or will be invested in yourself, in your job, the people you are working with, so you must be passionate about your work and be self-motivated. You have to stay current with technology and tools to make your work life easier. So, take trainings when they are offered, use free webinars to your advantage, and get professionally certified. Have integrity woven into your work life as you have it in your personal life.

If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?

YES! I would absolutely do it over again but would accelerate certain parts like education. I would have taken advantage of EVERY opportunity for training and professional development every year that it was offered to me. Sometimes we get a little lazy and say, not now, maybe next time or later.

What does YLNG mean to you and how have you contributed as a member of the Steering Committee?

I was so thrilled to join this wonderful committee who so willing welcomed me. I’ve enjoyed being part of the book clubs and events. What’s most special is that YLNG is providing me with endless opportunities to connect with like-minded community members.
