Employee Spotlight: Shylo Gonzalez

August 7, 2018

Tell me about your current role at Yale University?

I am currently the Clinical Receptionist at Yale Health department of OB/GYN. Beginning on August 13th, 2018 I will be the Surgical Coordinator in Pediatric Surgery.

What are your main responsibilities?

I schedule all appointments throughout the patient’s pregnancy and all routine annual exams and procedures.

What do you like most about your work?

I am a very empathetic person and love helping others in need.  I treat patients the way I want to be treated.  This job is not for everybody.  However, I build relationships with our patients because I see this as a lifestyle.

How does your job affect your general lifestyle?

Right now, my job is my life.  Working is who I am, and a smile and little compassion goes a long way. Every day I come to work and think what I can do to make that extra step.  I just love to help people.

How did you begin your career?

I am a medical assistant, licensed pharmacy technician, CPR certified and licensed phlebotomist.

What steps would you recommend one take to prepare to enter this field?

It takes a lot of patience.  You must come in this field with passion and understanding.
When patients are given unexpected results to unforeseen circumstances.  I make it my business to be that person to put them at ease.  If they find out they are pregnant I am here to help them in any way I can.  I empathize with them.

What skills, abilities, and personal attributes are essential to success in your job/this field?

I work well under pressure.  Daily emergencies are common at OB/GYN, so I have patience when tackling various challenges.

If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?

I would definitely choose this path.  Growing up I was used to seeing doctors, nurses and patients in a hospital setting because my dad worked at Bellevue Hospital in New York.  After high school I went to trade school and got licensed in medical assisting, pharmacy technician and phlebotomy.  I always wanted to enter the medical field.

What does YLNG mean to you and how have you contributed as a member of the Steering Committee?

It means a lot for me to be involved in YLNG because I thought it would be an honor to be a part of something my grandparents would be proud of.  I am proud of where I am from and what better way to show this.  I love my heritage and enjoy attending meetings and helping at the events during the year.  I am happy to have hosted Café Con Leche on July 18.  It was held at Yale Health and there were over 40 people in attendance.
