Employee Spotlight: Dresda Cotto

March 31, 2017

Tell me about your current role at Yale University?

Currently, I am the Training Coordinator for Environmental Health and Safety. I started March 2016.

What are your main responsibilities?

Responsible for coordinating all EHS trainings and department trainings among campus.

What do you like most about your work?

I enjoy helping other people, and the people I work with. EHS is a very rewarding department to work for. I love my EHS family!

How does your job affect your general lifestyle?

My job has a very positive impact on my lifestyle. Not only do I work for an awesome department, but I work with people who have really exposed me to what safety means. I have become more aware of my surroundings and always make sure that those around me are safe.

How did you begin your career?

I moved from California to Connecticut in October 2012. All that credit goes to Marcie Calabrese, Associate Director, Labor Recruitment and Temporary Placement, HR Staffing. She took the chance and gave me the opportunity to work at Yale. I started with YTSS in 2013, and have had such amazing experiences and met wonderful people since then. Marcie, thank you. I am indebted to you!

What steps would you recommend one take to prepare to enter this field?

It really depends on what job you are interested when it comes to EHS. With any job, experience and education is key. Most importantly, you must have passion. Do what you love!

What skills, abilities, and personal attributes are essential to success in your job/this field?

Where should I start? You have to be a person that wears many hats, be able to juggle multiple things at once, while being cool, calm and collective. You have to be flexible and open minded, yet organized.  One must be a problem solver, solution seeker, creative, and innovative. You must always have a thirst to learn new things. At EHS, we are a family and EHS exemplifies team work when it comes to daily business activities or emergencies that we have to face to ensure Yale and its community is safe 365 days of the year, 24/7.

If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?

No! I am in a great place right now and on the exact path I am meant to be on. I look forward to where this path will lead me. I have no regrets and I am very excited for what the future holds. I believe in taking chances, so if you seek change or want to be happier, go for it!

How long have you worked with YLNG?

Approximately 1.5 years.
